Henri Matisse, French painter regarded as the most influential painter in Paris and the most important artist of the century. The Leader of the Fauvist Movement, the Master of color. Color was the dominant force throughout Matisse's artistic career covering many varied styles from Impressionism to Abstract and ranking him, alongside Picasso, as one of the leading artists of our century.
